Works by Frederick Brown

12Dec2013
01Mar2014

In the Monte Pearson Gallery

Considered one of the most eclectic and aesthetically diverse African- American painters in portraiture, Brown focused his work to celebrate the achievement of Black men and women in the past, as will be viewed in this exhibition. But, as spontaneous as his paintings appear to be, all paintings - from the Native American series, to the blues and jazz, folk religion - required Brown to do much research. He remained expressive with his work - capturing feelings while painting and communicating with colors, brushstrokes on canvas.
“I’m not painting from life - since most of them are dead, I’m working from - photographs and I need something to fill in the outline......I’m trying to get a feeling rather than just a likeness,” - Frederick Brown, 1945 - 2012
