Inspired by a 125-year-old, lace and frill christening gown that belonged to an early Swedish immigrant to the Midwest. This “work of art” is seen with embroidered flowers as symbols of hope, innocence and good fortune, and some might say it’s a lost art.
Empty Dresses has three series of two-dimensional representations of dresses that are symbolic of those worn by significant women in Iowa’s history (including Abbie Gardner Sharp). Each is executed in a different or combinations of handmade historic media including egg tempera, milk-based paint, encaustic, metal point, charcoal and tannin inks.
