How do I register?

  • Call our BoxOffice at 712-332-7013 and ask to sign your child up for the specific class title or sessions. Over the phone we can take your basic information along with a payment to reserve your child’s place in the class.
  • Stop in to the Pearson Lakes Art Center at 2201 Hwy 71, Okoboji, IA 51355 and our BoxOffice can sign you up. Payment is needed at the time of registration.

After School Courses

Mini Michelangelo’s

Preschool – 2nd grade
Date: Thursdays
Time: 4-5pm
Cost: Members: $5 Non-Members: $7
Registration Deadline: Thursday prior to class

 

January 12 & 19: Making Clay Beads & Necklace

In this two-part class, students will learn how to create their own unique clay beads and underglaze. A week later we will meet after the beads have been fired to put our beads together to create a beaded necklace.

January 26 & February 2: Miniature Clay Village

On six clay tiles, students will create an interchangeable miniature village. Day one will focus on creation of clay tiles and Village pieces, day two students will add glaze color to their imaginative village! Pieces will be fired following the two classes.

February 9 & 16: Mountain Paintings on Wood 

Mountain Paintings on Wood: Students will imagine a wanderlust adventure as they paint a playful mountain scene on wood slices.

February 23 & March 2: Learning to Use Charcoal 

Young students will encounter charcoal drawing for the first time, learning to use kneaded erasers, vine and compressed charcoal, layering, blending, subtracting color, and adding texture on paper.

March 9 & 16: Bubble Wrap Printed Faces

Create a pop art inspired poster by drawing a self-portrait, adding bubble wrap painted designs and expressive words.
March 23 & 30: Glue Resist Birds

Make an adorable spring bird drawing with guidance, apply black resist glue over line drawing and add colorful paints the second class day to make the bird “come alive”!
April 6 & 13: Animal Collage

Cut and paste a fun, imaginative landscape, then trace an animal shadow and collage into the shadow to create a one of a kind animal atmosphere!
April 20 & 27: Cosmic Floating Chalk Prints

Cosmic Floating Chalk Prints: Inspired by modern artist, Emma Lindström,  explore your vision of the universe by floating chalk on water to create a cosmic and interesting solar system.



After School Art Club

Grades 3rd-6th grade
Date: Tuesdays, two day class
Time: 4-5pm

January 10 – February 28: All About Wheel Throwing*

*$40 Members | $56 Non-Members – Weekly attendance strongly suggested

In this eight-week course, students will develop all the basic knowledge of throwing on the pottery wheel. Instruction will include basic clay room procedures, throwing cylinders, bowls and plates, to trimming, adding handles, and glazing. Students will take turns using the pottery wheels.

March 7 & 14: Paper Art Mixed Media

Create an abstract watercolor image on watercolor paper followed by layering exacto knife cut abstract images on top to create a mixed media piece.
March 21 & 28: Mandalas

Paint a detailed mandala on canvas in this two day class and find your way to wholeness, the symbols representation.
April 4 & 11: Watercolor Animal Art

Watercolor Animal Art: Create a realistic yet fun portrait of an animal while learning to let go of perfection and explore the looseness of watercolors.
April 18 & 25: Cosmic Paintings

Explore your vision of the universe by marbleizing acrylic paints on canvas followed by intricate solar system painted detail in the style of artist, Emma Lindström.

Teen Art 
Grades 7th-12th

Date: Wednesdays, two-day class
Time: 4-5pm
Cost: Members: $10 Non-Members: $14

January 11 – March 1*: All About Teapots

*$40 Members | $56 Non-Members – Weekly attendance strongly suggested

Learn the history and technical aspects of creating teapots on the pottery wheel. Throwing on a hump, creating lids, handles, and trimming will all be applied to bellied and cylinder teapots. Decorating and glazing techniques will also be discussed. Students will take turns using the pottery wheel.
March 8 & 15: Paper Art Assemblages

Explore techniques layering papers, cutting out positive and negative images to create a story like art piece inspired by modern paper artist, Brittany Lee.
March 22 & 29: Gold Leaf Abstract Paintings

Using a large canvas, students will explore high gloss color along with applications of gold leaf to create a stunning abstracted piece.
April 5 & 12: Linocut Printmaking

Unleash your carving skills in this two day class. Participants’ will design a sketch and then apply traditional relief carving skills on linoleum block, apply inks, and printing on papers.
April 19 & 26: Marbelizing Acrylic Painting

Explore your vision of the universe by marbleizing acrylic paints on canvas followed by intricate solar system painted detail in the style of artist, Emma Lindström.

Performing Arts Education: Youth Acting and Dance Classes

Dance a Painting | Grades 1-6

When: Saturdays
Instructor: Marta Barnard
Time: 1:30pm – 2:30pm
Fee: $10 per participant per class Register by Friday prior to class

Children 1st- 6th grade will use the rhythm of a painting to inspire creative expression through movement and visual arts. Exciting music will encourage dancing in modern and improvisational ways.

Moms & Tots Dance

2 & 3 year olds with parent

Time: 10:00am – 10:45am
Fee: $10 per 1 child/1 adult per class Register by Friday prior to class

January 17 , March 21, February 21, April 18
Get moving with your 2 or 3 yr old and learn to translate a painting into free movement through the use of modern and improvisational dance techniques. Choreographer, Marta Barnard will lead this fun parent/child interactive dance class which will inspire coordination and balance as well as creative movement and even some free expression with water based paints!

 

Family Education:

Winter Tree Painting Resist
Date: Saturday, January 14th
Time: 10am-3pm, come and go
Cost: Individual size 8×10 $9  OR Family size 18×24 $18
Please register by January 12th to reserve your materials.
On canvas panel, families or groups will draw out a tree with guidance from the instructor and create a resist with glue over it. Using paint and variety of materials, create a snowy atmosphere around the tree and make your individual marks if you like as well! All materials included. Parent/Guardian supervision required.
The Whole World in Your Hands Clay Bowl
Date: Saturday, February 11th
Time: 10am-3pm, come and go
Cost per group: Members: $15 Non-Members: $20 (up to 10 people)
Please register by February 9th to reserve your materials
Create your family, friends, or groups hands in clay with slabs and attaching them with the score and slip method. Add designs and texture if you desire. Glaze  with underglaze paints to create a group bowl to treasure forever! All materials included. Parent/Guardian supervision required.
