How do I register?

  • Call our BoxOffice at 712-332-7013 and ask to sign your child up for the specific class title or sessions. Over the phone we can take your basic information along with a payment to reserve your child’s place in the class.
  • Stop in to the Pearson Lakes Art Center at 2201 Hwy 71, Okoboji, IA 51355 and our BoxOffice can sign you up. Payment is needed at the time of registration at least 1 week prior to the start of the class.

Youth Summer Courses

 

Preschool Picassos – Ages 3-5 years

Wednesdays, 10am-11am

Cost: Members $6 Nonmembers $8

Deadline to Register: Wednesday 1 week prior to class

 

June 14: “Stained” Glass Art

Create a colorful piece of art inspired by stained glass windows. Students will learn the basics to making a stained glass window by applying “lead” to the glass to make shapes and lines, then paint the glass with vibrant colors and let dry. Each participant will receive a frame to finish their work of art.

June 21: Van Gogh’s Landscape

Inspired by Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”, young artists will begin to learn how to mix their own tints and shades of colors in paint. Students will create swirly, curvy lines and combine painting with printmaking to make a tribute artwork to the famous artist.

June 28: Illustrations on Transparent Paper

Youngsters will create their own story by cutting and collage their own characters into a pre-made book with transparent pages.

July 12: Reflections on the Water: Sailboats

Learn how to make reflections on water using watercolor paint in the theme of sailboats!

July 19: Polymer Clay Image Transfer Magnets

Youngsters will create their own character drawings on paper, then transfer them onto polymer clay, cut out, and bake to create their own magnetic character set!

July 26: Clay Sandal Footprint

Create a foot print that will last a lifetime! Students will learn how to roll out clay and use their own foot imprint and attach a coil to create their own sandal!

August 2: Wallpaper Printmaking

Using a rolling pin and foam, little ones will create their own “wallpaper brayer”, ink, and print their design on long sheets of paper.

August 9: Observational Drawing with Blocks and Watercolor

Develop observational skills and hand/eye coordination by drawing stacked blocks and unusual shapes, finish by adding watercolor paint for a splash of color!

 



Gallery Story Time in your PJs! – Ages 1-4 years –NEW!

Select Thursdays, 7:00pm

20-30 minute program

Cost: Free, registration required to hold spot. 1 adult & 1 child combination.

Ever wonder how Pigasso met Mootisse or how one dot could lead to a whole painting? Join PLAC staff select Thursdays in the variety of PLAC galleries as they take us on a reading journey that connects books to the world of art. Relate the stories to the art in a comfortable space suitable for adults and children ages 1-4 years old. Admission is free, but registration is required to hold your spot. 15 spaces available for 1 student and 1 adult combination.

Students will learn about the process of glass blowing and artist Dale Chihuly. Students will be able to make their own “Blown glass” using plexi glass and combine pieces for a sculptural glass effect!

June 19 & 20: Plein Air Pastel Drawing:

Participants will get a chance to explore the Art Center grounds and create 2 Plein Air (in the open) artworks with chalk pastels on Colourfix smooth pastel paper.

June 26 & 27: Illustrations on Transparent Paper

Students will learn how to bind a book with transparent pages. Then, they will create an imaginative story, paint, cut, and collage painted and scrapbook papers for there scenes.

July 10 & 11: Reflections in Water: Insects

Learn how to make reflections on water using watercolor paint in the theme of insects!

July 17 & 18: Polymer Clay Miniature Food Sculptures
Make a miniature sculpture (or two!) with polymer clay material and paint. Learn how to soften, blend, flatten, and shape polymer clay to create all kinds of goodies!

July 24 & 25: Clay Lanterns

Learn or refresh your hand building skills in this two day workshop. Build, design, and attach clay to create your very own clay lantern with positive and negative space!

July 31 & August 1: Inspired by Wallpaper: Printmaking
Using a rolling pin and foam, students will create their own “wallpaper brayer”, ink, and print their design on long sheets of paper in the style of vintage wallpaper printmaking process.

August 7 & 8: Observational Drawing
Strengthen your number one artist skill by learning to see shapes, lines, and positive/negative space in observational drawing. Still life’s including objects, fresh flowers, and more will be used as well as a variety of materials!

June 19 & 20: Plein Air Pastel Painting

Participants will get a chance to explore the Art Center grounds and create 2 Plein Air (in the open) artworks with chalk pastels on Colourfix smooth pastel paper.

June 26 & 27: Illustrations on Transparent Paper

Students will learn how to bind a book with transparent pages. Then, they will create an imaginative story, paint, cut, and collage painted and scrapbook papers for there scenes.

July 10 &11: Reflected Dreams

In this course we will explore how to develop dreams (either from sleep or dreams of your future) into an artwork. We will explore how water moves and reflect these dreams onto the look of water using watercolor and watercolor pencils.

July 17 & 18: Polymer Clay Clock

Create a plate sized clock out of polymer clay! Learn how to soften, blend, skinner blend with polymer clay to create a fun and functional wall clock!

July 24 & 25: Clay Lamp Shade

Teens will learn or refresh their knowledge of hand building with clay to create a lampshade that has both positive and negative space.

July 31 & August 1: South African Mandala Printmaking

Learn how to carve linocut mandalas in this two day workshop. We will be inspired by artist, Jesse Breytenbach, and his new take on South African printmaking.

August 7 & 8: Lui Ferreyra Portraits in Line and Color

Create bold and prismatic styled portraits in line and color in the style of artist Lui Ferreyra using pen and ink on colored papers.

Family/Group Summer Courses

 

*Pre-registration requested. Materials subject to availability.

Open Studio Thursdays
Thursdays evenings 5:30-9pm.
Free for all ages- 16 and under with an adult.

Don’t have the space to create art at home? Join us every Thursday evening throughout the entire year we open up or Multi-Media and Clay Studio’s for the publics use. We invite you to bring an artwork you are working on and use our space, easels, and tables to create your piece in the Multi-Media Studio or purchase 25lbs of clay for $30 (including glazing and firing) to create sculptures or pottery in our Clay Studio! While we have some supplies available to use, please bring our own art supplies for the Multi-Media room.

Create your family, friends, or group’s hands in clay with slabs and attaching them with the score and slip method. Add designs and texture if you desire. Glazing Day will be held Thursday, May 25th from 4-7pm. Come and create a group bowl to treasure forever! All materials included. Parent/Guardian supervision required.


Footprints in the Sand Painting
June 8th

Cost: Members $15 Nonmember $20 *Price per group up to 4 per canvas
Deadline to Register: June 5th
Create a painting with your family that is ready for warm weather! Create a sandy beach and water, finishing by painting each family member’s foot to create their “footprints in the sand” painting! Family Class located in the Children’s Classroom on the lower level – participants must sign up for a designated time slot within the 10am-3pm day. 10am-11:30am or 11:30-1:30 or 1:30-3:00pm- 5 families per slot.

Sidewalk Chalk Photography
Wednesday July 5th (rain date July 6th)

Deadline to Register: July 1st

Create a Sidewalk Chalk image in the clouds, water, in a car, flying, or whatever you imagine your family or group doing! PLAC staff will take photos of your kids, family or group in their drawn image! Families/Groups will receive 1 CD of the images taken that day! Class Located in the PLAC parking lot!
