Youth and Family Art Education

How do I register?

  • Call our Box Office at 712-332-7013 and ask to sign your child up for the specific class title or sessions. Over the phone we can take your basic information along with a payment to reserve your child’s place in the class.
  • Stop in to the Pearson Lakes Art Center at 2201 Hwy 71, Okoboji, IA 51355 and our BoxOffice can sign you up. Payment is needed at the time of registration at least 1 week prior to the start of the class.

Family/Group Classes

Tie-Dye T-shirts

Monday, July 2   |   10 am – 3 pm   |   Sign up for a time frame

Non-Members: $10 ea.   |   Members: $8 ea.

Deadline to Register by: June 29

 

Join us two days before the Fourth of July for a PLAC tie-dye tradition! White t-shirts provided for youth to adult along with gloves and paint shirts for the messy tie-dye process! Take the t-shirts home in a Ziploc bag with washing instructions.


 

Fireworks over the Lake

Tuesday, July 3   |   10 am – 3 pm   |   Sign up for a time frame

Non-Members: $8 ea.   |   Members: $6 ea.

Deadline to Register by: June 29

 

Create the brightest fireworks in the sky on black paper, blend them into the lake for superior firework reflections!

June 13 | House Architecture

Explore the terms gables, bay windows, porches and more while creating a model house out of mat and foam core board.


June 20 | Handprint Fish

Use your digits to create the cutest fish in the sea! This fishy on canvas will be decorated with an unusual tool…celery!


June 27 | Styrofoam Mosaic Art

Using colored styrofoam, students will cut, arrange and glue to design their own mosaic on colored mat board.


July 11 | Clay Dog Faces

Cut shapes you know out of clay to create the cutest dog face you have ever seen!


July 18 | Crazy Pasta Sculptures!

On a piece of wood, kiddos will get to attach pipe cleaners into drilled holes and then add colored pasta to create a twisted, bent and colorfully crazy sculpture!


July 25 | Clay Texture Turtles

Students will use texture boards on clay to add design and dimension to shapes that will then be slip and scored together to create the cutest turtle!


August 1 | Near and Far Sailboats

On canvas, kiddos will paint with unusual tools to create water and sky, then we will apply large and small sailboats to create the illusion of space!


August 8 | Sunglass Self Portrait

Draw a portrait of yourself with oil pastels and add the coolest pair of foam sunglasses to complete the project!

June 11 & 12 | Castle Architecture

Learn what a pinnacle, curtain wall, flanking tower, and more are in this two-day workshop where we will draw the most amazing castle using oil pastels!


June 18 & 19 | Animal Close-Ups

Get ready to tear some decorated papers, create gigantic eyes, and nose to make an animal of our choosing out of collaged and painted papers!


June 25 & 26 | Mosaic Basics

Students will learn how to adhere, arrange, cover, wipe away and grout their own design on wood in this workshop.


July 9 & 10 | Handbuilt Vases

Using the slab and coil clay techniques, students will create a vase in this two-day workshop in no time! Pieces will be dried, fired, clear glazed and ready to
pick up approximately two weeks after the workshop.


July 16 & 17 | Reed Sculptures

Using flat, semi round and round reed traditionally used for basket making, students will use the material to create abstract sculptures where the reeds are dyed in color!


July 23 & 24 | Clay Cars

Use clay slab pieces to create the coolest clay car you have ever seen in this two-day workshop! Cars will be dried, fired, clear glazed and ready to pick up approximately two weeks after the workshop.


July 30 & 31 | Tiny Tin Landscape Paintings

Zoom in to the tiniest paint palette and paintings ever by using an Altoids container for your palette! Explore the miniature painting movement and see how easy it is to be creative anywhere! This class is outdoors.


August 6 & 7 | Something’s on my Head!

Self portrait – Imagine something has landed or is sitting on your head! Create a humorous self portrait while learning how to draw the human face!

Recycle old dishes into a beautiful piece of art on a wood background.

Learn the stages of pottery! Create 1–2 pieces and apply underglaze paint while still on the wheel! Pieces will be dried, fired, clear glazed and ready to pick up two weeks after the workshop. Limited to 12 students.

Explore architecture terms while creating a model house, barn, skyscraper, or imaginary structure out of mat and foam core board.


June 18 & 19 | Bold Art with Masking Fluid

Learn to use masking fluid to create bold patterns and designs on canvas covered with India ink and liquid acrylics.


June 25 & 26 | Mosaic on Vintage Windows

Use a large vintage window as your background for a colorful artwork made of glass mosaic.


July 9 & 10 | Pottery Wheel Creations

Learn the stages of pottery creation in this wheel throwing class! Create one to three pieces on the wheel and also apply underglaze paint while still on the wheel! Pieces will be dried, fired, clear glazed and ready to pick up approximately two weeks after the workshop. Limited to 12 students.


July 16 & 17 | Armature Sculpting

Teens will learn how to create an armature, its purpose, and design their own unique human or animal sculpture out of mixed media.


July 23 & 24 | Coral Reef Clay Sculptures

Students will learn and use handbuilding skills to create a coral reef full of interesting textures and shapes! Pieces will be dried, fired, clear glazed and ready to pick up approximately two weeks after the workshop.


July 30 & 31 | Miniature Landscape Oil Painting

Learn how to mix solvents, unique colors, and apply oil paints onto miniature landscape canvas paintings in this two-day workshop. This class is outdoors.


August 6 & 7 | Snapchat Filter Portraits

Use the latest app to snap a picture of yourself in the funniest faces! Then, select from a variety of materials to recreate that picture on canvas or paper of your choosing! App/tablet will be provided to use amongst class members.
